Brain Fog? Evernote to the Rescue!

I love the Evernote application!! LOVE it!

Why? Well, one of the symptoms of my Celiac Disease is the swelling of many things: hands, feet, face and, I’m guessing, the brain. I’m assuming this is cause for the oft-mentioned “brainfog” that people talk about as a side effect of ingesting gluten. And going gluten-free is a major undertaking for even the clearest of minds. So I think that when making such a drastic life changing decision, it’s best to have all the help you can! So a friend’s husband is a great guy: Economy Sized Geek who turned me on to this wonderful app Evernote. It’s the best thing that could have ever happened to my de-fogging brain. :)

It’s a cross-platform app (I use it on my iPhone and Macs, but they have it PC too) that syncs all kinds of useful information and files. Recipes, gluten-free shopping lists, links to websites, photos… you can organize and store everything in one convenient place. And it syncs automatically, so if you update in one place, it’ll automatically show up in the other(s)! Which is awesome: one less thing I have to remember. :)

Here’s a real world example of how I use it. Last night we had Taco Night and I had to do research to see what was gluten-free (and dairy free for me). So I googled everything I wanted to find, found wonderfully helpful recipes and hints. But I never trust myself to remember all the brands that are safe: every time I’m standing in front of the shelves, I stare at the shelves of similar boxes with similar names and get overwhelmed and can’t remember which was safe and which I’d read wasn’t good. So I clicked my handy Evernote link in my Safari toolbar:

It saved the helpful links right to my account. Then I typed up a quick shopping list and saved it to my account. Then I hit the “Sync” button, grabbed my phone and went to the store. When I got there, I just opened my Evernote app and there were my entries! Super fast and easy and free. No gluten mistakes were made tonight. :)

And the best part of this whole procedure is that now I never have to worry about Taco Night again! I always have my phone with me, so I can just stop by the grocery store on the way home and know exactly what I need without doing all the preplanning again.

So let me just say this one more time: I love Evernote! It will be my electronic memory until my recovery is complete (and even after!!).
